New Zealand's Cycle network and route planning guide.

Creating a safe and more pleasant environment for walking and cycling is considered to be a key means of promoting and increasing transport by these modes. It was identified that New Zealand has limited walking and cycling expertise and lacks guidance on best practice in this area. The Pedestrian and Cyclist Best Practice Guidelines Project aims to fill this void. One deliverable from this project is the New Zealand Cycle network and route planning guide, which describes the principles and planning process required to develop an appropriate environment for cycling. It also provides guidance on the techniques and tools used in cycle planning. A collaborative approach was used to develop the guide, utilising the expertise of cycle planners and advocates in a stakeholder committee to oversee the project. An international literature review provided the knowledge base on which the guide was developed, and input from international experts in cycle planning ensured the guide was consistent with world’s best practice.
