Abstract

This paper is aimed at smoothing the way for further ITS implementation and making sure that it is sustainable. It examines the notion that the ITSindustry needs to be managed to ensure continuing expansion. It sets the scene for future discussion in an effort to avoid industry problems that have been experienced in Telecoms, for example. The paper hypothesises thatthe ITS industry needs to be supervised, sustainable and symphonic. Theseissues are examined to identify approaches that can be adopted to secure the future for ITS; Global knowledge management, skills development and standards, horizon watching, readiness to react, viable communications and the right external image. The Highways Agency has established Information as a key resource in meeting its customers' needs. The Information Strategyhas been established to lead the industry in this direction in England.
