Abstract

A survey sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that more than 60% of drivers believe that unsafe driving, including speeding by others, was a major personal threat to themselves and to their families. The survey, conducted by telephone in the spring of 1997, aimed to learn more about the public’s experiences and beliefs about speeding, unsafe, and aggressive driving. Two versions of a questionnaire were used for a total of 6,000 interviews in this nationally representative sample of drivers 16 years and older. One survey instrument focused on speeding and the other on other forms of unsafe driving. Selected highlights from this survey are reported in this article. (Author/publisher)
