Abstract

New tasks and competences of the transport professional. There is a growing interest in an area-based approach to transport issues. In the case of road traffic problems this happens mainly with the sustainable traffic managementmethod. In this type of approach co-operation takes place between different public authorities at all levels. This new approach leads to new requirements for administrators and civil servants to cope with this collaboration, and to transform it in appropriate measures. These requirements also apply to the putting into operation and management of the measures. This paper is a quest for the new requirements and competences that will be expected from transport professionals. Both this paper and the contribution by Bram van Luipen and Joost Voerman deal with an ongoing study about the approach to public management and organisational issues in sustainable traffic management.
