Niger is a large country, at 1.3 million km <super2>, with a relatively low population density of 10 people per/km<super2>. The vehicle fleet number only 76,100 but in 2007, 4640 road accidents were recorded, causing 528 fatalities and 11943 injuries. This article also discusses the issue of roads as a factor in road accidents in Niger, road infrastructure characteristics which cause road accidents, and an action plan which will focus on road safety audits of projects, the elimination of blackspots and the systematic inclusion of road signs and signals in all road rehabilitation and construction projects.
