Abstract
A program aimed at reducing the contribution of passenger vehicle noise to environmental noise should include reducing tire-roadway-noise, the major contributor at the cruise condition. Current and pending legislation is basically aimed at reducing vehicle noise at the maximum noise generating condition. If these legislated levels are set too low, the noise reduction task required to achieve them may range from formidable to impossible.
