Abstract

Different types of waterproofing systems used in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark for concrete bridge decks are described in this report. Data are taken from a literature review. The quality requirements for the different waterproofing materials are presented, with reference to test methods. In all four countries, bituminous sheets are used. Finland uses sheets produced of polymer bitumen only, while the other countries use sheets produced either of polymer modified or oxidized bitumen. Finland and Norway also protect the concrete bridge decks with polyurethane, while Sweden and Denmark only have used polyurethane waterproofing on a test basis. Waterproofing with asphalt mastic is common in Finland, Norway and Sweden, mastic is common in Finland, Norway and Sweden, while it was abandoned several years ago in Denmark. An alternative combination of waterproofing and pavement is a thin layer surfacing. This system is used in Finland and Denmark. In Finland a special waterproofing system with plates of lead adhered with hot bitumen is approved. Vertical and sloping concrete surfaces covered with earth are in Denmark waterproofed with a bitumen solution or bitumen emulsion both containing fibres.
