Abstract

This chapter focuses on targeting the source(s) of driver distraction, and describes the current status of guideline-based distraction countermeasures in Canada and United States. The focus is primarily on guidelines for new in-vehicle information and communications systems, although these havemany design requirements in common with conventional vehicle displays andcontrols. The chapter also provides a history of the development of thesecountermeasures, highlights common features, and draws comparisons with efforts elsewhere.
