Abstract

The potential of intelligent transport systems (ITS) to reduce accidents and improve road transport is described. Many components of ITS involve a transfer of driving task elements to automatic or semiautomatic systems, thereby reducing or at least changing task demand. Driver capability may also be monitored. The difficulties involved in the introduction of ITS are discussed.
