In order to devise effective countermeasures to driver distraction, thereis a need to measure and quantify the level of driving distraction. Unfortunately, driver distraction is a multivariate phenomenon that no single measure can capture. This book chapter addresses one surrogate measurement method, "visual occulsion," which has been widely adopted as a measure of the visual demand of a task performed concurrently with driving. As the visual demand of a secondary task increases, the likelihood that it will divert attention away from tasks critical to safe driving also increases. Thebackground, procedures, apparatus, participant details, criteria, metrics, and conclusions of visual occlusion testing are described.
