Abstract

An analysis of present car ownership shows in many cases a positive relationship between car ownership and train use. More cars mean more mobility and this higher level of mobility will be reflected in more train travel. The analysis shows no evidence that the forecast growth of car ownership will cause a net decline in train use. On the contrary, growing mobility will result in more train travel.
