Abstract
Numbers on traffic signs at exit roads can solve the problem of route guidance without a geographical knowledge. Numbers can also provide a simple and clear method for the distinction of parallel going trunk roads, which led in principle to the same target. In the increasing complexity of the road network it is therefore necessary to introduce also in the Netherlands a numbering on traffic signs. Motorways must be indicated by an A, other important roads by an N, and roads in urban areas by an S, followed by a number. The layout of such number signs is discussed.
