Abstract

The unacceptable toll of road casualties is the reason for intensified government effort in vehicle safety regulation. A discriminating choice of measures implies careful appraisal of costs and benefits based on accident statistics. Possible future measures to improve accident avoidance and occupant protection are discussed. International work on safety standards, including ECE, EEC and the Experimental Safety Vehicle programme, is examined.
