Abstract

This report provides a full account of the OECD Full-scale Pavement Test undertaken in 1989 at the Circular Fatigue Test Track in Nantes of the French Central Laboratory of Roads and Bridges (LCPC). The Common Test was financed and implemented by fourteen OECD member countries and the Commission of the Europen Communities. Three experimental road pavements - two flexible and one semi-rigid structure, as well as maintenance overlays applied after significant pavement deterioration - were tested under 10 and 11.5 tonne truck axle loads.A total of 4.5 million load applications wer effected. The objectives of the test are delineated in the introduction of the report, whereas the test organisation and management are presented in Chapter II. Chapters III and IV describe in detail the pavement structures tested, the measuring systems used, and the conduct of the test and its various phases. Chapters V and VI provide a detailed account of the results obtained, their analysis and interpretation, including the use of pavement models. In addition, Chapter VII presents the few national comparative cross-tests undertaken to date related to the Common Test. The report concludes with a summary and future development needs. Information on important aspects of this international experiment is given in five Annexes. The extensive report is rich in research details and constitutes a substantial contribution to advancing pavement technology and assessing the effects of heavy vehicle axle loads. The detailed research data and documentation of the variousinvestigations undertaken, are available through OECD and will be presented at a special conference in La Baule, France in May 1991.
