Abstract
Despite significant progress in the past, OECD countries continue to face the problems of reducing the terrible toll of road accidents and of integrating the road transport system with its economic, environmental and social surroundings - problems which may grow as traffic grows along with countries economies. Although road accidents might never be eliminated, their incidence and severity can be greatly reduced. Because of the dominant role of the human factor in road accident occurrence, the paper centres heavily on measures regarding specific high risk age and road user groups: children, the elderly, pedestrians two- wheelers, beginner drivers and trucks.
