Abstract

The OECD Workshop on Knowledge-Based Expert Systems in Transportation was organized by the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) and OECD. Thirteen OECD Member countries and one non-member country participated. Volume 2 reflects up-to-date practical experience for developing knowledge-based expert systems with emphasis on roadway related applications. Included are discussions of: 1) a representative set of problem types that are amenable to solution using knowledge-based expert systems; 2) a description of the major components of a typical knowledge-based expert system and how these components interact in a problem solving situation, and 3) a guide for developing knowledge-based expert systems. Volume 2 is based on the 1988 Technology Share report FHWA-TS-88-022 "Developing Expert Systems" which was enriched through the experience of OECD Member Nations represented in the framework of a Scientific Expert Group. Volume 2 is organized in four chapters: I. Introduction, II. Definition of Knowledge-based Expert Systems, III. Components of Knowledge-Based Expert Systems and IV. Building Knowledge-Based Expert Systems.
