Abstract

Driving skills and performance decline with age. The physical and mental capabilities necessary to be a safe and competent driver are good reaction rate, good vision, mental ability and agility, good hearing, physical strength and agility. Vision conditions that are common in older people and common problems associated with misinterpreting information in the driving environment are listed. The importance of good eyesight and good hearing to driving safely is discussed. Psychological and physiological changes can be very gradual and annual checkups and eye tests are recommended.
