Abstract

This paper reviews the research evidence in order to establish: * whether older drivers have a higher accident risk than other groups of drivers; * the particular factors in accidents involving older drivers; * whether increases in the number of older drivers is likely to lead to an increase in road accidents and casualties; * possible countermeasures. For the purposes of this paper, older drivers are defined as drivers over the age of 60 years. However, older drivers do not form an homogeneous group and wide variations in their characteristics exist within this group. (Author/publisher)
