Abstract

This report presents the findings of an investigation into the transport requirements of older people, commissioned by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) in October 1999. The aim of the study was to conduct an audit of both current and future transport needs, taking into account future demographic changes in England and Wales. Transport issues for older people are discussed under the headings: accessibility, safety, affordability and availability. The study included four strands of work, namely (1) a review of international literature; (2) a series of focus groups convened among older people; (3) a household survey among the 60 plus age group; (4) discussions with stakeholders.
