Abstract

This article describes the on-board equipment being developed in Japan for dynamic route guidance. Details are provided of the system design of a generic system. A brief history of navigation systems is also provided. Details of the configuration of Nissan's 1991 model Cedric are provided to illustrate the configuration of onboard equipment. Greater detail is provided of: a) the map matching functions; b) the sensors; c) the digital map; d) communications media; and e) CDCRAFT. Future developments are also discussed briefly.
