Abstract

This paper deals in the first instance with traffic safety at night and in particular with the role of public lighting at junctions. A research project is described on effects on traffic safety of public lighting at junctions in single carriageway roads outside built-up areas. For 139 priority, level junctions in Gelderland relations have been examined between the number of accidents occurring by day-light or at night and a number of variables considered to be relevant. These variables include quantities with which present lighting on junctions, namely shape and traffic load on the junctions, can be described in general. Correlation techniques and weighted log-linear poisson models have been applied. Results only concern quantities of public lighting. Because of lack of information no conclusions could be drawn regarding the level of illumination on junctions. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 286502.
