Abstract
The quality of research on trip making will be improved by a large variety in research approaches. Recently, new initiatives have arisen to enlarge the quality of research on trip making in the Netherlands. This paper discusses some weaknesses of currently undertaken research on trip making, and presents a new approach which is particularly relevant from the point of view of a more sustainable urban form. Energy is an unambiguous measure for expressing spatial behaviour. Both the occupation in a particular space and the bridging of space is accompanied by the use of energy. Consequently, both activities at home and outside home can be analysed within the same perspective. (A)
