Abstract

This publication presents the recommendations of the "Grade separated junctions single carriageways" working group, which was supervised by the Netherlands Centre for Research and Contract Standardisation in Civil and Traffic Engineering (CROW). The two main questions that were investigated for the Dutch situation were: a) when can grade separated junctions be applied in single carriageways? and b) what design aspects are recommendable for these junctions? The working group concludes that grade separated junctions in single carriageways are justifiable under particular circumstances. As far as the level of service is concerned, grade separated junctions score better than grade junctions. Moreover, it appears that grade separated junctions are often, though not always, safer than grade junctions. The working group has formulated recommendations for the design of grade separated junctions in single carriageways, in which attention is focused on road safety. Particular attention is paid to grade separation on single carriage roads. This report includes the "Safety of grade separated junctions in single carriageways" report carried out by the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research.
