Abstract

The history of the Ontario Traffic Systems Users Group (OTSUG) is traced from its inception in 1983 to the present. The group is presented as an example of an organization where users share problems, experiences and ideas to provide high-level operation of computerized traffic signal control systems. The group has filled an urgent need for system users in Ontario, provided a forum for communication and has assumed the role of a lobby group representing the needs of the member municipalities to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. The paper describes how OTSUG has continued to change and evolve to meet the needs of the members as they moved through the various phases associated with the acquisition of a computerized traffic signal system; system specifications, the tendering process, system implementation and system operation.
