Abstract

In the Netherlands, like elsewhere, ‘road pricing’ is something that interests politicians and researchers. Whilst in other countries fairly successful (pilot) projects have been introduced, it would appear that in the Netherlands this is not something that has so far been possible to realise, despite various such plans. In this article we shall consider the different aspects that are relevant when it comes to developing price measures and we shall look at actual price measure plans in the Netherlands and abroad. We shall examine the objectives, characteristics and effects. Ultimately, within the scope of the MD-PIT research programme, we are interested in calculating the optimal price and predicting the traffic effects of given types of measures and policy objectives. The models and techniques developed for that purpose will be explained in the remainder of the article. (Author/publisher)
