In 1993, the `Sign up for the bike' handbook was published. This publication, also referred to as the `Design Manual for Cycling Facilities', has now been in use for four years. The Ministry of Transport and Public Works, who originally commissioned the handbook, now wishes to evaluate its use, in terms of the accessibility of the document and whether its contents are up-to-date and practicable. The evaluation may lead to the publication of a revised edition. The Netherlands Centre for Research and Contract Standardization in Civil and Traffic Engineering (CROW) has commissioned the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research to look into the developments which have taken place with regard to cycling and cycling facilities since 1993. The Design Manual contains information which has been accumulated over a period of some twenty years. The literature study reported here shows that the increase in knowledge, both within the Netherlands and abroad, during the last four years represents an extension of the data previously collected. Unfortunately, it appears that knowledge which was lacking four years ago is still not available today. This report recommends that an innovative study should begin directly in order to facilitate a revision of the Design Manual in approximately four years' time. (A)
