Abstract

This report investigates a number of foreign studies. The report focuses on the methodology used and the statistical analysis techniques applied. The central question was whether it was possible to deduce analysis methods that could be applied successfully to the Netherlands. It is concluded that one has to be very carefully with the interpretation of the relations that can be found with these methods. Nevertheless, the methods can cause interesting results, when they are applied in the context of exploratory research. The distinction between the different phases in the traffic system fits very well with how this system is looked at in the Netherlands. These phases are handled consistently, particularly in the Gaudry model. Ample time series of data on the different levels (phases) of the traffic system are available in the Netherlands. It would be best to start research on a relatively small scale, using immediate available data. It is not advisable to transform statistical analysis models that have been developed elsewhere to the Dutch situation. It will be possible to formulate the model using existing and available analysis methods. At the same time, it would be good to use and strengthen the international cooperation that is developing in this field.
