Abstract

In September 1984 a contest was held on the reclassification and reconstruction of urban areas to increase the traffic safety. In this article an impression is presented of the design which was rewarded with the first prize. The rather radical measures could be paid by making more use of the public space. The area studied has about 3500 dwellings and 10000 inhabitants and was mainly built after world war ii. There was a lot of space for motorised traffic, a lack of cycle routes, a surplus of parking places and almost no public transport. By reconstructing the road network, the introduction of speed limits, some traffic restraint a new layout of the area was created in which also 1600 dwellings more could be built.
