Abstract

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) is the main public transport operator for the metropolitan area of Barcelona and is an international reference in the urban transport sector. TMB covers the services provided byBarcelona's metropolitan rail service and Transports de Barcelona, SA (TB). These organisations provide collective transport services for passengers through surface and underground transport networks, which complement both each other and the companies in the sector which share this area of influence. TMB also manages several other public transport services. TMB aims to offer a public transport network which promotes the development of Barcelona, reduces the impact on the environment and satisfies the needs of public mobility with a high level of quality. Recent strategic plans includeimproving passenger safety and future automation of the metro. The automation projects are described including information about changes to signalling systems, interlocking fixtures, track circuits and new driving systems. Infrastructure reconstruction plans are described along with technical details relating to fleet and engineering issues. Communications systems, both on-board and around the networks are explained and issues such as safety, operations and environmental benefits are addressed.
