Abstract

An Open System Architecture able to support inter-operation of smart cards and of smart card based information services within and between different sites has been designed, implemented and demonstrated within the context of the DISTINCT IADS Project (IA 1003). The DISTINCT Open System Architecture consists of an integration scheme that builds on the components of the DISTINCT site smart card systems and introduces solutions that harmonise the differences between such systems at several levels: from the smart card architecture, through the user interface, to the interconnection with the service provider. In DISTINCT, service inter-operation was envisaged for a specific set of smart card services: personalised and non-personalised information services based on internet technology and accessed by non-user specific terminals. Moreover inter-operability of smart cards and services were demonstrated between the limited number of project sites. Nevertheless, the solutions designed for system integration support open architecture and modularity, and allow site-specific services to coexist with the inter-operated ones according to the local site technical choices.
