There has always been a tendency to underestimate the effects of new technologies, and transitions from one era to the next have taken place largely by chance. This contribution, based on the MANTO research project, examines possible trends in telematics, looking mainly at their impact on transport and settlement, but also studying their effects on society, the economy, and the environment.
