Abstract

A queuing theory model is developed for the controlled merging of vehicles entering an expressway ramp. The flow of ramp vehicles is restricted in response to downstream congestion or traffic jams. An optimal on-off controller is found for the stochastic problem with random stopping time which results from minimizing the mean sum of cars stopped in the jam the number of cars diverted from the ramp.
