Abstract

A model to determine the optimum design gradient of a road is discussed. This optimum design slope will be determined in relation to the minimum total annual cost. It must however be checked against the maximum gradient at which the road can be built to ensure that its capacity will not be exceeded during its lifetime. The gradient must also not exceed the maximum value at which heavy vehicles will be able to maintain a reasonable speed of say 15 km/h.
