Abstract

Mathematical structure optimization methods have been proposed as one way to design lightweight vehicles. This paper describes the development and application of these methods to automotive structures. The developed structural optimization synthesis capability demonstrated is clearly applicable to the preliminary sizing of the major load-carrying members of a structure.
