Abstract

Optimizing the system in this context describes the work of most state departments of transportation to seek the ultimate in the safe and efficient operation of the existing transportation network. The report reviews the many approaches to maximizing the efficience and safety and describes techniques that benefit the operations of automobiles, trucks and transit vehicles that use the highway system. Also discussed are other techniques that add to the efficient operation, such as traffic demand management and shifting traffic from single occupancy vehicles to transit and van pools to ease the congestion of the highway system.
