Abstract

The ESCOTA motorway company manages a 460-km motorway network in SE France. Optimisation of the network operating conditions has been ongoing since 1990, starting with urban areas. The main priorities are to keep the motorways viable, to safeguard capacity, manage the traffic and provide driver assistance/information. The requirements of the mountainous districts have to be integrated with those of urban and inter-urban areas. The motorway network hierarchy was classified. Traffic management operations (CISTE) designed to prevent saturation traffic in the urban areas are outlined. These include driver information using radio broadcasts and variable message signs. Safety procedures, control station administration and the costs of the operation are described.
