Abstract

The Orion program is a public/private partnership that is providing a regional, cross jurisdictional traffic management system. Orion integrates legacy freeway management systems and traffic signal controllers with new systems such as a revised CAD 911 system, Arterial management systems, as well as provision of enhanced traveller information. The Orion program started in 1997 and has currently (June 1999) installed a Traveller Information Centre as well as Ramp Queue Variable Message Sign System to aid the traveller. With the installation of the distributed system due through the end of 1999, the Orion system will: (1) enhance congestion management on freeways and arterial roadways; (2) enhance incident management on freeways and arterial roadways; (3) enhance transit fleet management; (4) provide travellers with access to information at home, work or en route regardless of mode; (5) improve interagency transportation information resources and sharing; (6) improve cost-effectiveness of agency operations and maintenance; and (7) provide travellers with additional timely, accurate transportation information regarding their trips.
