Abstract

In the VERDI covenant, it is agreed that central and local government in the Netherlands will jointly establish a system of monitors following the affects of policy. Especially for public transportation the OV monitor has been developed. Important issues for this monitor are: (1) to follow developments on a national and regional level; and (2) availability of data for analyses. The unique part of the OV monitor is that it deals with all the different aspects of public transportation: demand, supply, appreciation by customers and the financial part. Regional government cannot only follow the developments in their own region but can also compare their region with other regions (benchmarking). Public transportation is taking place in a dynamic environment. Borders of communities change, definitions in used databases change, etcetera. To maintain comparability all the input for the OV monitor will be transformed to the most recent definition. This is the only way to monitor without hiccups.
