Abstract

The use of cognitive models in traffic research can be considered as a new phase in the development of a paradigm. Cognitive models can shed light on mental processes which are responsible for overt traffic behaviour. The "Adaptive Control of Thought" theory of Anderson (1983) is evaluated and the conclusion is drawn that the framework alone is able to offer suggestions for the contents, form and phases of traffic lessons for young, novice cyclists.
