Abstract

By combining the results of English, Danish and Israeli research published earlier, some conclusions are drawn regarding the use and safety of both zebra and signalled pedestrian crossings. It appears that a favourable effect of the installation of such crossing will, especially in the case of zebras, depend largely on a sparing application, a cautious sitting, and a suitable "outfit" of the crossings. With respect to vehicular and pedestrian flows, two main fields of application of zebra crossings are distinguished. It is established that existing national standards to the purpose, refer mostly to one of these two fields only. The impression prevails that one of the fields induces greater safety, but that the benefit of zebras is doubtful in the other field of application. As to the outfit, special attention is paid to the favourable effect to erecting fences in the zones adjacent to crossings so as to prevent crossing there.
