Abstract

Overtaking restrictions as a measure of traffic control can contribute to an increase of travel velocities on motorways. Traffic of heavy trucks on motorways is increasing very rapidly in several countries. On the other hand, no equivalent expansion of the motorway network can be provided. Therefore, improved control measures for the handling of heavy vehicle traffic must be developed. One of the possible approaches is temporary overtaking restrictions for trucks also on level sections of motorways.
