Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the ACS-Lite adaptive control software for closed-loop traffic signal systems. ACS-Lite is designed as a low-cost, widely-deployable adaptive traffic control system that works with Econolite, Eagle, Peek, and McCain local actuated controllers. ACS-Lite collects data from signal controllers using the NTCIP protocol and makes real-time adaptive changes to the splits and offsets of the current traffic plan on the arterial. Performance analysis using CORSIM shows substantial improvements to total network traffic delay and specific delay and travel time improvements are possible in a number of typical scenarios where the baseline traffic control parameters are not optimized for the current traffic patterns.
