Abstract

As the demand for urban travel increases, environmental damage will be of increasing concern to policy makers. Influencing travel will become instrumental in keeping urban standards (quality of life) above minimum acceptable levels. Advances in technology and the accumulation of experience allow new concepts to be developed, tried and evaluated. An example of such concepts is currently being trialled in Athens: the pro-active concept of Advance POLlution Limiting Optimization and Navigation (APOLLON). This paper gives an overview of the benefits accruing from the application of environmental traffic control. (A)
