In this report, the results are presented of work package 2.2 `State of the Art Inventory of New Transport Concepts and Systems' of the European research project `Urban Transport Options for Propulsion systems and Instruments for Analysis (UTOPIA)'. The main UTOPIA project objective is to provide decision makers with the necessary information base, tools, methods, and guidelines for hastening the market introduction of the most appropriate transport solutions based on new propulsion systems. The UTOPIA scope is road-based vehicles and urban light rail for passenger and freight transport on an urban scale. The systems must have the possibility to be introduced to the market in 2000-2015, and to be fitted into an urban area. The report provides a state of the art inventory of propulsion systems, vehicle concepts, and transport concepts. Social, institutional and industrial barriers, and urban travel patterns are analysed. The report also identifies the most promising transport modes, namely combinations of a propulsion system, a vehicle concept, and a transport concept. The most promising combinations are identified based both on a expert survey, and on a structured methodology to assess the main criteria for typical urban travel patterns. The expert survey results show some optimism about the introduction of new and environmentally friendly transport modes based on new propulsion systems. A draft framework is presented for data collection for case studies and analyses of this data, in other UTOPIA work packages.
