Abstract

This paper presents an overview of traffic safety programs in the United States. Activities concerning the driver includes alcohol and other drug countermeasures, police traffic services, use of safety belts and child safety seats and the problems for older drivers. Programs related to the vehicle includes vehicle crashworthiness, safety for motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment and installation of occupant protection systems. Other programs deal with the safety of pedestrians, work zone traffic control, nighttime visibility of traffic control devices, the reconstruction of the road network to promote safety.
