Abstract

The increasing interest in cycling and the critical attitude of today's cyclists induce the authorities to expand and improve cycling facilities. In natural darkness the contours of cycle-paths can be discerned reasonably well by bicycle-light alone, but only if the cyclists do not get dazzled by oncoming traffic or confused by other light sources. In those cases additional public lighting could be a supporting asset. Research has been done into the minimum acceptable level of lighting (allowing safe and unhampered cycling) by making experiments.
