This study of "Person Trips in Karachi City" not only provides information on the trips generated in the city of Karachi on weekdays and weekends but also emphasizes the changes that have occurred in person trip generation and attraction in Karachi city over a period of time, in comparison to the earlier Karachi Mass Transit Study (KMTS). The KMTS was conducted in 1987 and it identifies six corridors of traffic growth, which have been assigned priorities. The present study suggests different priorities to the seven corridors obtained by the Person Trip study. Changes have occurred primarily because of industrialization and land use changes occurred over the past 19 years. Karachi is the largest city in the world, with a population of more than 15 million, over 1.34 million vehicles on the roads and a minimum of 24.227 million person trips daily. Out of these person trips almost 60 per cent are being catered for by minibuses/wagons which is an uncomfortable and unreliable mode of transport. The city is in desperate need of a well established mass transit system particularly over congested routes. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E214938.
