Abstract

An important element in the recent Traffic and Transportation Plan for the Amsterdam Region is the parking policy. In order to reduce car traffic, the plan proposes drastic parking restrictions, particularly in office areas, combined with high parking prices in central areas. So far, parking capacity has been following demand, and prices are reasonable. In principle, the municipalities in the region are willing to implement this policy, on the condition that: (1) they are given the required tools for the application of parking standards, including existing areas; and (2) their ability to compete with other municipalities is not threatened. Uniform implementation of the policy in the Randstad and providing the tools to do so, is the responsibility of the national and provincial governments. (A)
