Cargo, conveyance, pathway, and terminal form the basic and integral elements in transportation. Whether the cargo is people or goods, and whatever the conveyance or pathway, a terminal facility must be present at the beginning and end points of each movement. When the terminal is inefficient, the resultant effects are delays and added cost. Impairment of other transportation facilities can result as well. Traffic engineers therefore must devote attention to the design and operation of terminals. This chapter deals with terminal facilities as a crucial element involved in the transportation equation, and it sets forth design and operational guidance to the professional. Automobile parking facilities of both surface and structure type are discussed, in addition to loading activities at curbside and off-street. Dimensions and elements of special-purpose vehicle parking also are included.
