Abstract

This paper describes the parking availability discrimination systems in the expressway parking areas of JHPC (Japan Highway Public Corporation). The systems use video images of parking areas taken by CCTV cameras to detect parked vehicles with computer based image processors, which operate on a neural network model to output three conditions, i.e. "occupied", "congested" and "vacant". These conditions are displayed on signboards to inform drivers of parking availability prior to their arrival. (A)
